Help us Save the Broward Cats

Twelve cats at Broward County Animal Care still urgently need safe placement.

The original group included 16 cats. Four have since been adopted, which is wonderful news and exactly what we hope will happen for more of them. If more of these cats are adopted directly, fewer cats will need to be transported to Artemis House, allowing the funds raised to go further for those who still need sanctuary placement.

10 of these cats have a September 22 placement deadline and two have a September 29 deadline. Artemis House is working directly with the local rescue community to secure their safety. BCAC is a kill shelter. Cats who do not secure adoption, rescue transfer, or another placement may be euthanized.

These cats came from homes shared by elderly people who could no longer care for them after entering the hospital or assisted living. The cats are now described as “shelter scared” and have been designated as working cats. They need time, patience, and a safe environment, not another upheaval.

Artemis House is prepared to welcome them if we can raise $7,500 for fencing expansion, transportation, veterinary care, quarantine, SNAP testing, housing preparations, food, litter, and their initial and ongoing care.

We have previously welcomed cats from BCAC labeled “unadoptable,” including Pancake, Yoda (aka Meatball), and Tzatziki (aka Yogurt). Once removed from the fear and stress of the shelter, they became affectionate, trusting cats who are entirely capable of thriving in loving homes. They proved that “shelter scared” is not the same as unadoptable, and we want to give these 12 cats that same chance.

Where does the money go?

For context, Artemis House generally asks for approximately $1,000 per cat when taking on a lifetime sanctuary commitment, and similar intake contributions are common among sanctuaries providing long-term care. For this emergency effort, we are asking for only about half that amount.

The $500 does not cover the full lifetime cost of caring for a cat. It helps us make the initial commitment responsibly.

The funds will help cover:

Secure fencing and housing preparation
Transportation from Broward County
SNAP testing for FeLV/FIV
Veterinary intake and medical care
Flea, parasite, and preventative treatment
Quarantine and transition needs
Food and litter
Bedding, enrichment, and supplies
Ongoing care while the cats decompress and, where possible, become ready for adoption

The fencing alone costs approximately $2,500, including Purrfect catproof fencing, predator protection, and installation.

How much is still needed to help the cats get to the sanctuary?
